First- I miss you. Second- my vacation on Cape Cod was just so perfect in countless ways, I could do a separate blog for it. I grew up going down there as a kid and this time to have my own, running around the beach with their cousins was heaven. Griffin doesn’t see his east coast cousins much, but you wouldn’t know it by the way they all hang out together. We also had our niece Audrey stay with us to baby-sit, and anyone with young kids knows it’s a treat to go out for a dinner date more than once a month. We shared a beautiful old “cottage” with Barrett’s sister and her family. They have a beautiful little girl. Our days started way too early, but if we made it to the beach before anyone got pushed or bitten, it was a good morning. The weather everyday was A+. We lucked out in every way. Driving around and having all that Americana summertime fun. And I will treasure so many quiet moments with my boys of that sweet time.
Rhys by the way is amazing. Basically right on track with kids that do not have hearing loss. He is hearing all the stuff he needs to with his hearing aids at this point and right now doesn’t look like he will need cochlear implants- which are a miracle if you are a candidate, but may not be a hurdle for us. Regardless, of all that, Rhys is a big chubby, smiling baby and just everything you could want in the “kissy face” department. He is breaking his parents back though now, because all he wants to do is walk- but at 7 months we are doing all the work.
So imagine that sublime vacation starting by jumping in a car packed with your family and all your stuff and your favorite NY pizza, (and a good bottle of wine- we had a driver) ready for a 5 hour ride in the middle of the night- still in your show close from one of the most special performances you have ever been involved with.
For me, the “Casi-NO Tour” was the “Casi-YES” tour. What was not to love about this tour?? You might be thinking what is not to love about all our tours. This is true. But this last one felt so pure. I felt like a baseball player on a mid-summer hitting streak, playing on a team that was in first place by 10 games. I loved the weekend thing, cuz you could be home and see the fam during the week, but then hit the road and take care of business- which for me was: hit the gym and hang at the spa until someone came to get me for sound check and meet and greet. Then rock the house. Meanwhile, the Celtics were having an amazing play off run, so we’d come off stage after the show and have dinner in the dressing room while we watched the C’s win one series after another on their way to the Finals. Nice, right?
Every stop on the tour was so sweet. You know the dates… Vegas. Nuff said. Miami. C’ mon. Cruise. Epic. Foxwoods. Hometown vibes. AC. Fist pump. Always a major party- and the “Best Spa” award- they had to pull me outta that one. Chi-town- 3 shows to the head and never enough. T-Dot- we made you travel to the cornfields but it was romantic :)… Windsor- little bit of “border love”. And finally, the grand-daddy of them all. NYC. At the mausoleum that is Radio City Music Hall. Sound check is even special at RCMH. Each show was unique. We made some changes… And as a performer that was maybe risky, but the idea was to take it to another level. (Donnie is like a pilot at the controls of a rocket ship and you are trying to fasten your seat belt while yelling, “Do you think this is gonna woo….” Too late- blast off!) That first show took me a bit to loosen up because of the specialness of the place and meaning of it all, but then it was on!
This tour’s show was so fluid to me. I did feel great. I always try to feel as good as possible to perform, but this tour I definitely took my conditioning to a new level. There’s a saying, “jump and the net will appear.” Well, I jumped. And I started to fly. Before we get to ‘sweet dreams’… I felt great from the start of each show. We talked about what the “look” would be. Jordan had some strong ideas about that and I thanked him often, cuz I loved what I was wearing for the opening. It was ready-made instant swagger. I never really “went there” in the swagger dept. Normally I want to start more sleek at the beginning of the show, but this tour I came gangster from the start. It was fun and felt like “pow.”
As far as the line up of the show, we as always go back and forth about what song list would work the best. Overall I was relatively confident in rehearsals, but then I thought after a couple shows that the flow was hot and exciting and I felt it every night and was excited about each section of the show coming up. (there’s a theme here, if you didn’t notice, of me going with the flow- Note to self: go with the flow more often. It works.)
Now as for my solo: I have always put extra special thought into my solos. I am grateful to the guys for such a moment on such a stage to reach out and touch all of you and be loved in return. Each tour- from Stay the Same, which was broken down into a quiet moment but ended with ascension on the stairs and lifted by a choir. To my old school medley, that was cinematic, yet pared down and intimate. And was the seed to 5 Brothers. And then the summer Full Service tour- Popsicle??!! You finally got it out of me and it was a blast. Plus I got to sing a song that I wrote about you and us and rock that out every night on top of a grand piano. C’mon! After that, I was feeling that “how could it get better than that” feeling. But I sort of naturally go to a place of trusting myself and letting go. Knowing that I will come up with something. (I wrote the ending of my “old school medley” on the plane to our European tour last minute). For this tour, I flirted with another version of 5 Brothers, but in the end, I felt it really couldn’t get better than the Full Service version (my wife kind of gently convinced me of that…not that I’m never gonna sing it again, but in the context of the NK big picture…). So…as a whole the show had a DJ- shout to CheapShot- and it had a clubby vibe to it and we talked about different “mash-ups” and incorporating that feel throughout the show, so that got me thinking. I wanted to do a New Kids song, but I was running out of songs that I have sung lead on that would fit. So I looked down the list and came to Twisted. And thought right away it was a perfect fit for the upbeat party we were creating. And then I wanted to mash it up with something. At the same time, I don’t know what came first, Sweet Dreams idea or Twisted. But check this out- Both songs are the same tempo AND the same key. (Now, with “mash-ups” it happens all the time that DJ’s change the key and tempo to fit the mash-up. Sometimes that works great, but often it just doesn’t work. It has to feel right. It this case, we didn’t have to worry about that. We tweaked the arrangement a little bit, but it was pretty much meant to be). Now, Sweet Dreams is one of the all time classic New Wave 80’s jams. When that vamp comes on it just fires you up. I remember distinctly, being on my front porch as a kid with my Walkman (most of you weren’t born yet- I looked like I was 8 years old in ‘88, but I had at least 5 or 6 years on most of you). It was a killer song of my youth, so has intrinsic value. So to hear that song come on every night and hear the cheer from the crowd getting fired up and then step up on the stage and walk up to that mic and feel like I was hooked up to wires and being juiced by a thousand volts…Aaauughh!! And then that initial surprise of going into Twisted. And yes, I was feeling Freddy Mercury, and yes, it was misogynistic and a little androgynous. And yes, I enjoyed going there. And yes, it felt good in that tux jacket. And it felt good to take it off- or feel confident enough to take it off. There is no better inspiration to stay in shape than having to take your shirt off in front of thousands of girls every night. It was hot.
The ins and outs of this tour were just a lot of fun. And to end it on a Saturday night in June in NYC at Radio City Music Hall. And oh, by the way, have a surprise special appearance by one of the most successful pop bands of all time and sing one of the greatest pop songs of all time with them. And to be hit by the wave of euphoric reaction to such a surprise. Man! That was something special. So good, you’d hate to think we couldn’t do it again.
How do you top what we (5 bros. and a million sisters) have done for the last 2 years? It is not a stretch, after witnessing our recent love affair, that we can continue to have it all. The ultimate get-away for you. The ultimate get-up for us. Traveling the world singing our song for years to come. I Want It That Way. Don’t you?

Awesome blog!! I love you guys and I’m so glad I was able to attend the cruise and the last show at RCMH. The last show was epic and the cruise was a blast!! I can’t wait to see you guys again!! Also glad you guys had a great vacation!! My next vacation is my honeymoon…hope I have as much fun on it as I had with you guys on the cruise this year!!! Thanks for letting us know how Rhys is doing. I pray for all of you every day and I’m glad to know he is right where he should be and that you are all doing well.
I have had an incredible time with you guys not only the past two years, but the last 2 months! We got free tickets to the Miami concert and we were so grateful. You guys went beyond what any other group would have done to be sure we could be there. You are right, the only way to describe the cruise is EPIC! I am so grateful to have been there. It was one of the greatest things I have ever done in my life. My friends and I had fun every single second and I still can’t believe I was there. I can’t wait to do it again! *fingers crossed* Hammond was so much fun and it was awesome to hang out with everyone I have met on Twitter the past year. I could happily relive both of those weekends the rest of my life. Let’s Groundhog Day this!!
This was a great Casi-No Tour (Thanks for the name @JenRaLee). I loved the whole thing especially the acoustic section with Danny playing the guitar and the solos. I felt like you each had your time to shine (even Jon!! I finally got to hear Step 5!!) and yes, your solo was…umm…greatly appreciated! *blacks out* Lookin good Joe!!

I’m so glad you are enjoyed a nice vacation with your family. We never want to be the cause of you guys neglecting your families. We love you too much for that. I did notice that very detail on the tour. I loved that you guys got to go home during the week and enjoy your families. It was good for us, too, because we did not feel like you got bored or tired of us so easily that way.
The tour was AMAZING! Miami, the cruise, NYC! I had the most amazing time! Thank all 5 of you for that! I am now going through withdrawals, so to hear from you is a fantastic, though temporary, cure. I can’t wait to see what’s next!!
I beg you, while your heart is full and bursting with all this incredible sentiment and energy, write us some amazing songs for us! Your family also seems to be a great source of inspiration to you. I had the opportunity to see the Casi-no-tour at 5 locations. Each time…you could feel the audience getting crazier and more energetic. I love knowing that maybe (a guess) 65% of the crowd are return customers. Each time I saw the show you could feel the audience climax and loose their minds at the first few bars of Sweet Dreams. Most of us knowing what was coming. “Freddy Mercury, misogynistic and a little androgynous” is the perfect way to explain it. I left the Miami show feeling like I had seen a side of you; we all knew was there. The theatrics, the facial expressions, the old school rock feel. I loved it. And dude it was SEXY as SEX. After the Orillia show…while stuck in the middle of a bunch of “cornfields” with a few glasses of wine….even my friends and I took part in inmitating your routine ….and creating our own somewhat x-rated Twisted/Sweet Dreams Routine. Stealing many of your moves, and improvising with a curtain rod and black hoodie. lmao I have never laughed so hard in my life. Its memories I will never forget!
The fans could feel you “letting go”. It showed. And yes we knew you hung out at the gym and spa…but choose to give you your space…so that you could remain “balanced”. I really do feel the fans have a growing sence of respect for what you guys do. As well as the time you need for yourselves. You may feel differently. But I sence it in the crowd.
As much as the clothes in the show are important. I will tell you I saw the show 5 times and can’t remember what you guys wore for the first song. That all didn’t matter to me. I was focused on you guys. You could have performend in hoodies and jeans and I wouldn’t have noticed. Just happy to have one more moment of reinvented teenage love affair with the 5 guys that stole my heart at 13.
Can’t wait to see what the future holds. Always want to be a part of it. Thank god I have such an understanding husband and family. The past 2 yrs hav braught me forward into a new self awareness. I can’t give fully to others without remembering to treat myself along the process.

As it is, wonderful blog Joe, great to get the inside scoop…the Joe girls got OWNED on this tour, much like the Jordan girls did back in Fall 08 when he came out and did the shirt-blowing-in-the-wind old-school version of Baby I Believe in You (followed by Give it to You!). Of course, Joe girls weren’t the only ones!

I was on the cruise and did five Casi-NO shows with four after-parties. Enjoyed every second. Love you guys and eagerly anticipate whatever the next chapter is!

Hey Joe!
I was there on your first night at RMCH. I thought you were perfect.
That was my first ever NKOTB concert. If it felt great to you, imagine how great it felt for me!
I went travelling during the whole time of your European tour last year (I’m from France). Got the chance to see you at a gig in London in September 2008 (was living there at that time, but just about to leave a few days later), but that was all and I couldn’t believe how bad the timing was : you coming back, me leaving….
Anyways, my boyfriend and I had planned to celebrate our 10th anniversary in NY this June (we met there), and everything had been booked for months. Living in France, I didn’t really follow the Casi-NO tour dates, until 3 weeks only before the first RMCH show.
I hadn’t checked on you for a while, so I went to the NKOTB website on my lunch break one day, just to know if you had posted anything recently. Why did I look at the tour dates? I still don’t know. Never ever could I have imagined that you would be in NY during the time I was there. And never could I have imagined that there would still be a few seats left on the 17th! I called my boyfriend straight away to tell him, and he said to me -he’s so sweet- that we should book the best seats we could, no matter how much, for this was the chance I waited half of my life to finally see you…
You cannot imagine how happy I felt that day. Finally, after all those years…It makes me want to cry just to think about it.
Anyways, I was there on the 17th. You all looked and sounded amazing, and I had A BLAST. I sang my heart and my lungs out during the whole show, clapped my hands furiously until it actually hurt, and even maybe cried a little when my boyfriend wasn’t looking…It was so, SO wonderful. It really really was. I love you so much guys. I will never thank you enough for coming back into my life. You’ve been such a big part of my youth (though I actually discovered you later than most fans, during the FTM area - I was 13), I could never really forget you and give up on the hope that you would come back one day. You still had your place in my heart during all that time we were apart, and I always knew a reunion would happen some day.
And then it happened. And it was a complete new experience to me, who discovered you when it was almost over. I could never, NEVER thank you enough for this. My friends think it’s a bit silly of me, so I usually cannot express what I feel about you, about all this, but I know the fans here and you guys know what I mean when I say all that. I truly and deeply love you all, and I will always be grateful for everything that you’ve done for us.
Enjoy your time off guys, and come back soon! We love you and we need you! Don’t ever go away again, please!

Joe Mac! Thanks for the update, I was starting to think you might have forgotten about here! Vacation was well deserved, love the pic sounds like you had a great time! I have to admit that I am a certified Donnie girl and my bestie is in need of a Joe Mac attack, with that said I finally had the chance to meet D Dubb himself so yes, the cornfields were definitely romantic!!! We also had the time of our life when we had the chance to see NKOTB IN NYC AT RCMH, by far the BEST show of all time! And believe me when I say I have seen a few! Also believe me when I say I hope it was not the last. You have brought back so many great memories from the past, I still remember my first show with my dad! And lets not forget about the memories that have been made in the last two years!

When are we doing it again? I AM READY!!! I am planning on getting to that cruise finally!!! Maybe a tour after that? How about Hawaii?!? Good times! I remember you guys playing there back in the day, because my sister has lived in Oahu for 25 years, and I visited her there and in turn, missed by first loves by 2 weeks! It was all good though, because I did see you in Ohio 3x as a pre-teen/teen. Memories. . .so glad you get to share those times again with your kids. I LOVE the PIC!! Too sweet! BTW: I enjoyed the Buddhist philosophy of going with the flow more often…so worth it! Sometimes it can be difficult, but you will always make it through. Much love to your family!! You all really defined my childhood and there is no better feeling than being in the audience at one of your shows as an adult. The flight from L.A. to NYC for Saturday’s show was completely worth it…I feel so blessed. And Sweet Dreams…that was absolutely AMAZING!

What is so much fun this time around for me is seeing how “real” you are. I have a 2 and 4 year old. So a good morning here is when no one was bitten or pushed. I also have a 5 month old. I take a picture, then notice the zillions of brightly colored plastic pieces or random (clean) diapers in the background. I really love that you share that part of your life with us.
Great news about Rhys, too! My little guy is really into standing, requiring us to do the balancing.
I missed the casiNo your, but I You Tubed the mash up. It was hot, and I am sorry I missed it live! Hoping to catch the next tour, either with NKOTB or Eman.

Wow, Joe. You are an amazing, eloquent, thoughtful writer. I am so impressed. I can feel how happy and blessed you are in your life. You really do have it all. Family, true love, friendship and an epic and legendary career. I remember watching a vintage interview clip with you and Danny where you were asked what you wanted for the upcoming year. You said that you just wanted to be onstage and that you hoped to be there for the rest of your life. It makes me so teary eyed to think of how far you have come. You still have the same youthful spirit and zest for life that you did then but you have matured into such a wise loving man who has lived some life and knows that it’s all about balance. I am so proud of you Joe! And if it’s up to me and the rest of the NK fans - you will be onstage for the rest of your life.

We just recently came back from vacation (a very secluded area in northern ontario…so peaceful and queit with my husband, children, sisters, BIL and neices! Further north than Orillia!!!). I throughly enjoy reading what you write. I wasn’t able to take in the nector of the Casino Tour, but I did get to take in the other tours…some more than once. That was definitely a Casi-yes-Yes-YES Tour! You all looked HOT! And seeing you all in 5-star, you actually felt like brothers! Except brothers I’d like to hook-up with….that’s kinda gross!!

I would just like to say what a story teller you are. I can only imagine the stories you tell your children night after night and the journeys you must take them on. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this outpouring of love and honesty. You don’t get that too often from performers! Enjoy what is left of your summer.
