Read Danny’s speech from this past weekends Susan G. Komen for the Cure event:
I am honored to be here today speaking in front of so many inspiring women. I have met so many women over the past couple years that have courage, pride and hope embedded in them. My mother, Betty Wood, had those qualities embedded in her. As I stand here today, I am truly honored to be called her son. Even in her passing, 10 years ago, September 20th, 1999…. I am so blessed to keep her memory alive. I am also blessed that she now has become an inspirational symbol to so many. It really shows the power one person can have — not only in life but also in death. I always believed she was more than just my mother, something more spiritual.
Through life, we all accomplish things. There are important things we accomplish, that we carry with us and we won’t let anyone take them away from us, nor diminish them. Our major accomplishments become a part of us. Well, my mother made all the small achievements feel larger than life. For me, it could have been winning a race in track, getting honor roll, or even one of our 1st New Kids shows where we got booed. She would look me in the eye and say, “I am so proud of you,” and then she would kiss me. They were kisses of pride, of love, and of belief. Just like my two daughters, Chance and Vega kiss me everyday.
When I close my eyes and pray, I can’t fight the feeling that is still deep inside me. I still long to hear my mother say “I love you,” “I am proud of you.” I am so lucky to say that when she passed, nothing was left unsaid. But through the years, I have prayed for one last chance to hear her words again. My sons (Anthony and Daniel) and daughters (Chance and Vega) answer those prayers every day, and through the New Kids reunion, I have heard her words again through so many people. I have met so many women who are now surviving the disease that took my mother’s life. But I do know now, as hard as it is to say, she was taken for a reason — to inspire many and to give new hope.
Today, she would have told me she is proud of me. She would have told my family she is proud. She would have told my dad she is proud. Betty Wood is now a symbol of hope, inspiration, strength and courage. For me, she is also the light that shines at the end of the tunnel where the cure for breast cancer waits for all of us. Thank you.

I hope that in 10 years I will be able to see my mother’s passing in the same light. This speech makes me want to work harder to honor her and to make her proud of me. Thank you Danny.

Thanks you so much for sharing it here for those of us who can’t be there. Your words are truely inspirational, your Mum is such an inspiration to us all. We all are affected by the disease in some way, and through you and the New Kids reunion we are all able to be stronger for each other and our loved ones. The biggest changes in my life since this all started have been due to my decision to raise money for cancer causes by doing charity running events, I am a better person for it in so many ways. Thank You.
Love you always Danny

Danny,
What you have shared is so moving to my soul. You have such a good heart and loving your children like you do makes you an even more wonderful father. I heard you sing at the Expo on Friday and you sounded too good to be true. I wish you the best of luck. You are such an inspiration because you share your mother’s legacy through your music. I also truly think, she speaks words of courage and hope to all of us through you.

Up until 10 years I was fortunate enough to say that no form of cancer touched my family but 1 year ago I lost my grandpa who was the one man in my life who loved me in a way I can’t describe to prostate cancer. Cancer in any form is unacceptable and I pray everyday that we find a cure soon. I know your mother is so very proud of her son for all he does and all he inspires in her name.
God Bless You.

Danny,
Those were some of the most beautiful heartfet words I have ever heard. Your mother was and still is a VERY VERY lucky woman to have you as a son. You are a wonderful person. I know that your pain is probably going to stay with you forever, but I also know that your mom will also be there in spirit to tell you that all will be OK. Your mom was a great woman and she has a WONDERFUL son!
My prayers are with you!

Thank you Danny for sharing this speech with us, and sharing your memories of your Mother. I lost my father to cancer only three months ago. I know the pain, and I commend you for being so brave as to be so open about something so incredibly difficult. You are surely as brave as your mother Betty was in her fight, and Im sure she is proud of you. Not only for your success back on the BLOCK….but for the success in turning your tragic loss into hope for others.
Love

Your speech brought me to tears- it was good reminder for me to always make sure I appreciate and acknowledge the “little” things that my sons do, make them feel special. I do try my best but sometimes I feel like I can do better. Thank you for sharing that inspiring speech and I’m sure your mother would have given anything to see you shine right now as well!

I want to say that I am sorry that your family had such a harsh loss 10 years ago, & I also want to say that I think it is amazing, wonderful & generous of you & your family to help inspire others to give and help with the fight to find a cure… You are the best!

Danny what you do for all those women out there who are fighting everyday and every minute of their life is truly a blessing. You are giving all women who are fighting and who are surving this disease hope. Even though I never met your mom, it isn’t hard to say that she is proud of you and is watching over you everyday. I lost my “second”mom to lymphatic lukemia 5 1/2 yrs ago, so I understand your pain, but your willingness to move forward and spread the word for a cure. Hopefully, in our children’s lifetime cancer will be like a common cold and no one has to suffer. I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. We are all very PROUD of you. God Bless you and your family.
Much Love and Respect,
Laura

That was beautiful. I am tearing up and I’m sure she is looking down on you from heaven smiling and beaming with pride.

I too would love to have the opportunity to hear my mom once more say how much she loved me. I have so much respect for you and what you have been through. I am new to this, as I have just lost my mom four months ago today. It seems like I can hear my mom talking to me, but at the same time I can’t. It is funny how you don’t realize how much you have until it is gone and you can’t get it back. You say you were blessed to have your mom, but Danny she was blessed to have you for a son.

OMG Thank u sooooo much for that Danny. That is the sweetest thing I have ever read. I would have loved to have been there to hear the speech in person. I was starting to cry just reading it. My father passed away last year from lung cancer. So the pain is still very raw. Even though it was a different type of cancer all cancers are bad. I do believe ur mother is an inspiration to so many women out there. My her memory live on in u and ur brothers and sisters and ur children, nieces and nephews.

Danny, words cannot express how awesome of a person you are! You are doing many things for this cause that people like me never had the courage to do. Your giving me that courage! Thank you! Thanks for sharing that speech, I can tell your mother was such a special person to you as my mother is to me. It’s nice to see someone I look up to doing something with their celebrity for such a great cause.

Such a great cause, Danny, I am so glad you are getting the word out, your mom is smiling down at you from Heaven. One of the news anchors on the news station I watch is also supports the Komen foundation in Northwest, Ohio–the race for that was last Sunday, September 27, 2009. One day a cure will be found.

Danny, I hope you realize that you continue to make your mom proud with your involvement in the search for the cure for breast cancer. I genuinely believe she knows what you are doing on her behalf and for your girls. (I didnt know your mom, but as a mom, it would make me proud to see my own son fighting so hard for a cure.)
Thank you for sharing your speech with us. Take care!

Much support from me and I have to say, you guys need come back to Tulsa soon, an amazing show!!! Keep up the inspiration for you daughters and sons!!!

Well, Danny, what do you say after you’ve said it all? That speech was lovely, & I don’t think you could honor your mother any more than you do already. YOU, Mr. Wood, are an inspiration to so many and I can hear Betty whisper on the wind “I’m so proud of you son!”. I personally do not know anyone who has or is struggling with breast cancer, but I do, however, deal with the sorrow at the loss of loved ones.
I AM PROUD OF YOU! Thank you for reminding me to tell my family on a regular basis how much I love & cherish them & how proud I am of my own son! Us mother’s are strong, but we are only as strong as our family. I think your mom knew that precious gem because the result of her love for you is seen in the strength you impart to your family and all your loyal fans. I love you & keep up the good work, Danny! ~FloMac1 aka Floreisha (Blockhead 4ever)

Danny - beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m sure your mother is looking at you from up above and smiling, thinking of how proud she is of your work to fight cancer. I know you miss her and think of her everyday. She brought up a wonderful man. And I know what you mean by believing she was more than just your mother - something more spiritual. It’s s amazing feeling (and comforting) knowing someone is there always. Thank you again!!!

Dera Danny,
Inspirational. My friend has just had to have a lump removed & she is a very positive woman. But this is hard for her although she has help as both her mother & Sister have been through it & survived. due to the high risk she is so lucky to be put on a program that has her checked regularly & caught it in time (Please GOD)for her to also get through it successfully. These things are only possible when you get people like your Mum who’s memory can live on & make awareness & charities to carry on getting the backing to help women as soon as possible.
Keep the faith!

I love you Danny. Like ya’ll say way back when: “…through the laughter and pain, the sunshine and rain… baby just keep on smilin… AND MAKE LOVE TO ME..” Your mom would be proud. You have always been an inspiration to us through your music but this is a whole different inspiration that touches all women in ways you can only imagine. You are one hell of a man and I’m as proud as your mom is, always was, and always will be.
We took a picture together while Chance looked out the window during the Emergency Drill. I’m Nicole.. Unfortunately the pics did not come out b.c the sun was behind us but ima find you again on this next cruise and I just might kiss ya during that pic if ya let me!
Keep up the good work in your music and in your heart! XOXOX ~Nicole
