This blog is the informal yet official announcement of something very
exciting and powerful-
The Let’s Get This Foundation-
Helping the world, Step by Step.
I believe that all of us want to help out, but we don’t know how or we
just don’t think our contribution will make a difference. Thankfully,
the fact is we can make a difference.
The Let’s Get This Foundation is about people coming together to learn
how, in even the smallest ways, we can make the world a better place.
We are gonna learn as we go, but the time is now!
We want this foundation to be a hub for all kinds of charitable works.
A place where we can go to get involved in something that we are
passionate about. A place where we can find a passion we didn’t know
we had.
Charity often feels like a selfless action, but we believe that
there’s no greater feeling than helping others in need.
Like it says- helping the world, Step by Step- we will take it one
endeavor at a time.
So… “Step 1″ is a Summer Children’s Book Drive on this year’s Full
Service Tour.
There is an enormous lack of age appropriate reading material for the
kids.
I will be informing you with the staggering facts in the coming weeks.
Of course, I am aware that I am asking you to buy a new book after you
already have paid for tickets to our show, so if you can’t afford to
do it now, maybe you will be inspired to help out in another way.
But a quick note to those of you that spend money on teddy bears and
t- shirts or hats for us, maybe this summer you can spend it on a new
book for a child that really needs it
We fully appreciate all of the gifts you bring to the show and it is a
sign of your artistry and love, but I know me and the guys would feel
alot better knowing that your gift went to a bigger cause.
Early reading is crucial in so many ways and effects almost every part
of society. There is a huge void and I know we can fill it with new
books for these children.
I will be in touch with all kinds of info and a new web-site to link
us all up.
In the meantime, I’m working on a studio version for “5 Brothers and a
Million Sisters” and will give it away as a free download to those who
bring a NEW childrens book to a show this summer. Having the actual
books in hand is great. However, if you choose not to bring one with
you to the concert, we are hooking up with an amazing on-line
organization that will enable you to buy a new book for as low as TWO
Dollars!!! Those who want to go that route will also get the free
download- my thank you for getting involved.
I will be looking for volunteers in every city to help out at the
shows, so start working on you “why I want to be a part of the book
drive” in 100 words or less essay
EMAIL ONLY TO: letsgetthisfoundation@gmail.com
More to come very soon!
Thank you for listening.
And I wouldn’t be asking your help if I didn’t think we will be making
a huge impact on this problem!
Now… For real….
Let’s Get This!!!

First!
Awww Joe, as if I didn’t love you enough before! This is a great idea and even though chemo is keeping me from your concert in Toronto this summer I’ll be online donating for sure. I know books are essential for kids growth, I was surrounded by them as a kid and I’m doing the same for mine. Thank you for looking out for the greater good!

Hi Joe,
Maybe something for your foundation to think about? The children’s hospitals are needing dvds and tvs for the rooms where the sick kids have to stay. Sometimes the kids are in the hospital for long periods of time so something to watch and pass the time would be beneficial. As someone who has used the kids hospital in the past, any toys and distractions would be greatly appreciated. They are in constant need of new dvds and they go missing or there just isn’t enough to go around.
Great idea on the foundation!!

May 21st, 2009 at 10:33 am
Joe,
you and the guys continue to inspire and amaze me for opening your hearts to a bigger cause in relation to what you already do with music. Thank you for thinking of the bigger picture and allowing us to get involved in such a way that it will definitely create an impact. We have such an army behind us, that it would just be a waste to not do anything with that gift. In other words, KICK A** idea…I’m down with the get down! Let’s round up the troops and let’s get this!!
Lotsa Love from SF,
Reese!

AAbsolutely fan-freakin’-tastic idea! I’m in. I’m very much in! I’d be so honored to help this foundation do good things - even if that means bringing a few books. It’s the least we can do.
So proud to be a NKOTB fan…always.

I think this is an AMAZING idea!
We’ve got to give an enriching and all around better education for our children. I don’t have any kids myself, but I have little cousins who will benefit from this!
Fantastic Idea <3

Excellent opportunity to get involved, make a difference, and change something - anything - that needs changing. Kudos to NKOTB’s involvement not just for emphasizing and supporting the need for education through reading at a young age, but also your support and awareness of everyday issues, such as breast cancer. You have proven to be not just a group of entertainers, but also humanitarians. Your efforts are much appreciated.
At 34 yrs old (not ashamed of it, rather proud to be here), I never dreamed I would see you all again. I purchased concert tickets to the show in Camden, NJ on June 6 just last night and I must admit, I feel like I’m 16 again. I simply cannot wait.
Question: will there be a collection for books at that concert? I know I can bring at least two and I know of one other person who will be at the show and can forward your message on to her. We both volunteer for the same non-profit organization - Supporting KIDDS (here’s the link if you’re interested: http://supportingkidds.org/) - and I’m sure she wouldn’t mind bringing a book or two along with her.
Finally, a current resident of Bear, DE, I was born an raised in Philadelphia and am still a Philly Girl at heart. I would be interested in learning more about the volunteer opportunities in the tri-State area (PA, NJ, DE).
Thank you, again. See on the 6th!

Joe,
This is such a wonderful idea!!I would love to be a part of it. Reading is the most important building block to a childs education. This could be something really amazing. I love your heart! I will see you in Virginia Beach with books in my hand and a smile on my face! Love you guys and thank you for everything you do! XOXOXOXOXO

This is AWESOME! As a parent of a 5 year old who has loved books since before she was big enough to turn the pages herself, I see every day how important books are to children. Even if she has the words to the story memorized, she still goes through the book and makes up her own stories about the pictures. She will start kindergarten in Sept. and she already knows how to read and not just 3 and 4 letter words. All because she has had books since before she could talk. I really wish I was able to attend a concert this summer to help out. I will do my part though..
Love ya,
Crissy

I hate to just toss them, I would rather to go to a good cause. Let’s show the world that the NKOTB fans can and always will “Get this!” I never stopped believing in you guys…..NEVER!

How about if I WRITE a childrens book? I always wanted to do that but been too busy writing other things to get onto it…
Will this drive be happening in other countries or just the US?
May 21st, 2009 at 10:49 am
How do you do it? Every time I think I can’t love you more, you prove me wrong. Reading is my first and greatest love. This makes my heart happy. I’ll be bringing a whole stack of books, that’s for sure!

great idea joe! much love always for you guys. you always find a way to give back! that’s why we love you all.

I think this is a fantastic idea!! I will be more than happy to help out if I can! I wish y’all were still coming to Raleigh and Charlotte b/c it would be much easier for me to get there and help than it will be at my Va Beach show but I still want to do whatever I can!! You guys are the best! This is an excellent cause. Too many times today, parents set their kids in front of the TV w/ a movie or video games rather than giving them a book to read where their imaginations can really take off. I was thrilled when my children followed in my footsteps and enjoy reading. It’s a dying art, I’m afraid. I really love you for doing this, Joe. It’s so important. Again, I will do all that I can!!
Let’s get this!!

Joe, I’m LOVING the idea of a book drive!! It brings together some of my favorite things: children and reading. Oh, I’m really excited about our upcoming shows now!
As a child, I loved to immerse myself in a good book; my mom still has tons of my old books back at home! You can definitely count on me to be a part of this!

Wow Joe, seriously I <3 and the rest of the guys. What an amazing idea. It’s so great to see that you guys are using your fame for good. I love the early reading program and it’s close to my heart for sure. I used to work with troubled kids in high school, teaching them how to read. It’s amazing how many there are out there that really can’t. Starting early is key for education. So, this is such a great cause! Thank you! I will be signing up in my area

Fabulous idea Joe.
I did 6 weeks voluntary work in my annual leave. I nursed and taught at Mother Terresa’s Hospice for the Destitute and Dying in Delhi and it was amazing. Words can’t express how gratifying it was and as an added bonus I made great friends across the globe. I get letters from the Nun’s every 3-4 months that make me smile for days despite them containing the same questions: have you met a man? are you married yet? how’s your Dad? It’s very cute!
So, if you’re thinking of going global I’d love to do something to contribute. We’ve got an amazing on-line mentoring site in the UK called “Horses Mouth” and anyone can do it. It fits around work, studies, family, socialising and there’s always someone who wants advice or needs to see some friendly words. Maybe you could add that to your list of things to promote?
Anyway, just wanted to add my comments here. Wish you well with all of this.
Xx

Hey Joe
The ‘Lets Get This Foundation’ is a truly amazing idea!
My Mum is a Primary School Teacher, so I know and understand first hand just how important learning in the early years just is and how it can set you up for the rest of your life. (hope that doesn’t sound too corny!) But it is very true!
I know that the Foundation is in its infancy, but when you come back to the UK I really hope that you can bring this will you! I’ll be the first inline volunteering my help!
I’m sure that this will be a fantastic success.
God bless
XOXO

Joe,
just when I think it can not get any better - it does.
It would be great if the Let’s get this foundation could find a way to get qualified/trained people to work with children/teach them how to read/read to them. A book is a great start, but the little ones also enjoy when an adult reads to them.
I love your idea!

I’ll bring 2 books to the Camden show.
This is why we are here to give back & make a difference no matter how small the contribution you can make it all adds up.

But this is an awesome idea, helping children to get a new book to learn to read or give the parents some help to read out to their children is great!
Children need books and they need to read out..i did it to my kids since they were only a few months!
Please come to Germany so i can help with this…and maybe there is another one where i can write a story for!

You guys never cease to amaze me. You all have such beautiful and giving hearts. I think this is a wonderful idea. I have two boys 10 and 7 years old and reading has become one of their biggest joys. I am absolutely ready to help! There are far too many children out there who don’t know the power that a book holds. Truly, you are all wonderful. The more we keep going the more I keep seeing that NKOTB is not only an experience, a band, a concert…it’s a lifestyle…one of giving. Thank you again for everything.

Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.
I think this will go a long way…..There are soooooooooo many kids out there who don’t even have access to one book. We have a book bank in our neighbourhood where people can bring old books, donate them and you can go every day and take one free book home…amazing. To try and do this all over the world….geniuos.

Wow Joe! I love this!! I’ve always been a big reader. My daughter is 6 now. She is about to finish Kindergarten and she is reading on a 2nd grade level. I have been reading her daily since she was born, and it’s paying off. She picks books over TV anyday and she just loves to read.
When she outgrows books, we donate them to area charities. I will definitely be bringing in some new books to the ATL.show!!
Kids really are our future, thanks for doing this!!!!

Joe Mac, you make me smile. Reading was one of my favorite things as a kid and has become a lifelong enjoyment for me. I used to LOVE picking out new books to buy from the little catologues they’d send home from school. I shall see you this summer, children’s book in hand!
May 21st, 2009 at 11:26 am
This made me cry! I left my career in accounting and went back to school to become a teacher because I think it’s so important to reach out to our children. This is a beautiful and worthwhile cause! I will bring a book to or more than one to EVERY show I attend! What a wonderful idea!
You guys ROCK!

Joseph….
You have touched my heart and made me smile today. Thank You… ♥
I am a Preschool Teacher and work in the Social Services sector with families from all walks.. Children’s Literacy is a subject very close to my heart! Encouraging literacy among our youngest of children is a gift that costs very very little to give and is One that will serve them well throughout their entire life. For all the children who will be gifted by, and for all the adults who will read to those children from books donated by your new foundation… Thank You, what an awesome idea!
I have an amazing group of NK’s Friends.. we call ourselves Blockette’s.. we will all be at the Toronto show.. Book’s in hand and if you need… time offered!!
This also sounds like something I can share with my Preschoolers.. they have the true benefit of Children’s Literacy on a daily basis.. What better time then when they are young to teach them to share that gift with other kids! If their families all donated one book each from our monthly book order.. That’s a whole lot of books for your cause… Will chat it up with my supervisor… Wish me luck!
Congrat’s on the new foundation…. It will change lives for the better..

As a teacher and mother of 2, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Literacy is so important, and I am amazed at the number of parents who just don’t take the time to read to and with their children. I actually had a mother tell me one time that she felt anything “educational” for her young son was inappropriate. I fail to find any reason in her statement. As a reminder to all who have children in their lives….Please remember that many public libraries offer summer reading programs. Investigate. Explore. Take Advantage. Nothing is more important that passing on vital knowledge to our children. Remember, they will be taking care of us one day. Let’s make sure they have the skills and motivation to do a great job. Hopefully they can do a better job than we or our parents or grandparents have done. Joe, KUDOS!!!!!!!!
May 21st, 2009 at 11:53 am
Well, this is fantastic. I’m excited about it. Every time I turn around you guys are always trying to give back. I love it! I’m down for it 150%.

All right the guys say they have the best fans in the world! Well Joe needs our help so here is my challenge to you. I just got off the phone with the director of the Jubilee house in Dorcheste (former home of the Knight’s (yes them Jordan or Jonathan) and we are going to do a book drive starting now ending on the last day of the full Service tour. I just ordered the book called New Kids On The Block, I thought that way I can give and give with a smile. Ok back on cource. I dream big. That’s how I live, what can I say I’m a LEO with a heart.
God has spoken to my heart in a big way this week and I think you will agree when I tell you what happend but go to the form for that. Send us a 1,000,000 books.

If you are going to the NEW ENGAND SHOWS…Bring your books and we’ll bring our truck. Let’s get this it’s not a catchy slogan it’s a means of hope.
But id you want to take this one step further…$1.00 donation inside every book and you will celp us rebuild our carrage house.
May 21st, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I think running another drive without Joe’s approval might be counterproductive. Maybe you should clear this with them. I’m sure they’ll love it, but come on. Just follow their directions until you get their endorsement.
May 21st, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Great Idea! Can’t wait to hear what’s next! You guys are always reaching out to help! I have young kids and I know how important reading is! Keep us updated!

Hey Joe, What a wonderful idea and thanks so much for letting us be a part of it. Like you guys, we just want to give back too. If this is what you would like for us to do then I’m sure we are more glad to do it. In Indiana we have a program called the Dolly Pardin Imagination Library and each child born in Fayette County gets one free hardback book sent to them in the mail until the child turns 5. 2 of my kids have received these books and I must say we have an awesome library of children’s books now. So, this is awesome and I hope the kids who receives these books have as big of a smile as my kids do when the mailman brings their books! Let’s Get This Joey!

Wow! You are really a great great great great guy and I would love to volunteer for the ATL show and other events as needed. What a great idea…How do I do it from the UK..Not coming to the Summer tour!
May 21st, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Can I just say Joe you never cease to amaze me? What a GREAT gift to give back - the joy of reading. Unfortunately as Im in the UK Im unable to attend any shows (my mother was going to bring me over for West Palm but some family stuff happened and shes coming here now) so cant give anything at the shows, but I will try my best to donate as much as I can. I grew up with a mother who encouraged me to read and it was a gift I cherish - and still do. Hopefully we this group we can encourage others to share that as well.

Cool idea!
But do I REALY need to write an essay on why I want to volunteer? I can give you the most direct answer without wasting space and would fit the 100 word criteria:
Cuz I really(x96)wanna!
I’ve volunteered to help collect food for USA Harvest when I went to my Goo Goo Dolls shows as this was the organizatin they support. So bringing a book to a NK show will be nothing new for me!
Thanks babe and GOOD LUCK with this! I can see tons of books being donated! No let me get to work on looking for some books for the kiddos! They need to get those imagination juices flowing early!

Or is the web site going to have one. I know you don’t want a repeat of to many books but copies as well. Anyway, I am deffanitly on bord with this one. I love books. I say it all the time, but I am SO PROUD TO BE A NKOTB FAN TODAY! This is an amazing idea and as a mother with school age children, I TOTALLY understand the need for books. I am lucky enough to live near great schools but there are so many schools here in Las Vegas that dont even have libraries in them.
Again, I am so proud of you guys for giving back to the community.
Im sure there will be more info later but will the donated books stay in the city they were collected or will they all go to one place?
May 21st, 2009 at 2:31 pm
A very good idea Joey!
We’re ready over here in the Netherlands to collected some books for this children. Its realy a good thing that every kid had to read books, they learn a lot of it. But when you visit the Netherlands the books will be in Dutch language,so the books must send it to Dutch children, right? Is that the plan?
But over here in the Netherlands most off the children will go to the libary and my children goes with the school to libarys to read books. But there are a lot off children over here they do not have the money or anything like that to go to it. Thats a shame.
So I do like this idea very much!
So Joey tell us if you visit the Netherlands,if we do have to buy a Dutch or a English book ?
Mine regards, Hendrika (zonnekindpop on the twitter)
May 21st, 2009 at 2:43 pm

MIAI- Mental Illness, Awareness Initiative- From Yvette Jones-Chung
My name is Michael & I have forwarded you a letter that my wife has written to me. Hoping to make her dream come true. Story-What I would like to do is be an advocate /spokesperson for Mental Ill people for North America.I believe everyone has a purpose in life and dreams. So my dream in order to begin healing is to let people know they are not alone in this battle with the various mental illnesses. I want to let others who have a mental illness know that there is hope in life. Like with any other illness, e.g. cancer, heart and stroke, etc. We need to accept it, not hide it and be embarrassed by it I believe if we can get the message out there about the seriousness of mental illness, just like we do for breast cancer. We need to strengthen the awareness by getting mentally ill people, professionals who work in the mental health field, government support and advocate Mental Illness is just as serious as any other disease. I as a single individual cant do this alone & need the right people and support to begin the process. I believe being a normal person I can help other normal people join together in the awareness. I had to hide this illness for many years from people and lie and say I have other acceptable diseases in order for people to understand why I stopped my career. I have decided to tell my entire family that I have a mental illness and let them know the truth about how I feel. Its time we stop hiding behind the illness and we need to bring this illness out in the open. My son is my inspiration, I want him to walk into the future knowing that his mother didnot let the disease control her but she controlled the disease. I recently went on a NKOTB cruise by myself, and decide what does the future hold for me. And in my heart I found the answer I will find a way to be a spokesperson for mentally ill people. Oprah please help me to start this journey.
To Joey,
I believe all illnesses are serious. I have hidden my illness from my family for many years. I want to pursue just like you Joe a dream of helping others. During the cruise I did a lot of soul searching. I have been diagnosed with few mental disabilities and I was told to keep this a secret and lie. No more lying, the truth has to come out, in order for me to pursue my dream This secret has caused my husband extreme pain and has caused me to miss out on my son Adrian’s first two years of his life. These two people are the most important people in my life. But now my husband supports me on my quest to be an advocate for the Mentally Ill for North America. So in my heart I want to volunteer and be part of the book drive, its my step forward to begin healing. Thank You

I sent you an email….

I beleive in supporting other causes like Danny and the Breast cancer for his mother, Joey and your childrens book drive- for my two year old is my inspiration for living with my severe illness. Jon who has annouced to the world he suffers from anxiety and panic. Donnie for comforting me on the cruise on Sunday when I became very ill. All of you smiled at me at my first meet and greet when i just got out of the cruise hospital. There are many causes and many needs , if I help others, one day someone will help me.

May 21st, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Okay Joe, I think you guys just get sweeter and sweeter everyday with the stuff you do. Trust me I would be the first to sign up to volunteer if I was gonna be hitting the tour. Having a child that was not as fast at reading and one that is above her reading level the importance of books is needed for every child.
LOVE YOU GUYS!! Great idea.
May 21st, 2009 at 5:54 pm
This is so Awesome Joe!! I will have to go the online route since my FL show is no longer. Love, love, love, 5 brothers and a million sisters!! We can for sure get this!!! Love this idea!! Love you.
May 21st, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I’m so glad you guys totally “get this”. I’ll be bringing books to each of my concerts. Still not sure if I’ll be going to the concert in my home state, so I won’t be sending an email to be a volunteer, but I do plan on bringing bilingual children’s books with me. Second language acquisition is so important at such a young age for those children whose first language is not English. With bilingual books, children can learn to read and their parents can still be a part of their increasing literacy!
Love ya!

Oh I LOVE this idea, what an awesome way to give back. And seriously 1 new book can be found pretty cheap, I mean the dollar tree has a ton of kids books, for a buck! Pretty sure anyone who can afford to go to the concert can afford that! I can’t wait to see the turn out for this, and hope I will be one of the lucky ones to help out!
May 21st, 2009 at 8:04 pm
I am so excited about this. This is the kind of thing I live for. I am going to school to be a child thearapist. I love stuff like this!!!
May 21st, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Joe~
I am running around the house because I am so excited you guys are doing this. I do things on my own anyways, I get people involved and seriously there was SO much more I could have added to my essay that you should know about. 100 words was not enough for me.
THANK YOU for doing this drive it is so great!!! You should see one of my projects I did…it was a powerpoint and I used “This one’s for the children” it was directed towards child hunger.
May 21st, 2009 at 8:10 pm
As a speech-language pathologist and a mom of a 5 and 2 year old I know how important it is to read to your children. Language and reading are the building blocks to learning. I think providing books to those families who do not have access to new books is a wonderful idea, what better gift that the gift of learning. I also think it is important that in this fast-paced world we live in that people slow down and read to their children every day. Thanks so much for doing this Joe, what a great idea!!
May 21st, 2009 at 8:18 pm
LOVE IT! What an awesome idea! I will be at the Camden concert with books. Can’t wait to see what else I can contribute to the Let’s Get This Foundation in the future.
May 21st, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Do the books have to be in English. I live & teach in China and I know that kids everywhere need age appropriate reading materials. In the USA there are people from every culture who speak & read all languages. Maybe I can bring some Chinese language books for kids??
May 21st, 2009 at 8:29 pm
I think this is an AMAZING idea and I would be honored to contribute!!!
See you at DTE!!!
May 21st, 2009 at 9:10 pm
As a Kindergarten teacher at a Title 1 school (economically disadvantaged) I see first hand the importance of getting age appropriate books into the hands of early learners. I am passionate about this cause. I think it’s awesome that you guys are giving back to the community.
Let’s Seuss this
May 21st, 2009 at 9:11 pm
I HOPE YOU READ THIS : ) I’M A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER!! : )
Did I miss it? Did you mention which age? I’m a 2nd grade teacher and yes, I’d know of what books are popular at that age. Joe, mention the age ranges so we can narrow our searches! Is this for American kids or worldwide? We have to mindful of the content in the book so that all readers can understand it. Great idea! (One of the big problems facing literacy also is the lack of funding to keep local libraries open. We all know kids can check out as many book as they can but school and local libraries are having to cut back on hours.)
Promoting literacy! Come to my classroom and do a Read Aloud, Joe! OR any of the fellas!!
May 21st, 2009 at 9:24 pm
I LOVE this idea..it is beyond fantastic! Thanks for doing this - I know the kids will appreciate it!
May 21st, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Hey Joe,
I am a social worker and I am a huge advocate for helping other people, and volunteering for underprivileged populations is one of my favorite things to do. Last summer I went to Guatemala to volunteer with an organization who helps many of the poverty stricken families down there, and I was fortunate to work with them for a month and half. I developed a passion to bring awareness to some of the challenging issues many families face down there and many other countries, including ours.
I am excited to see you are starting with a book drive, and I am curious to see what the next “Step” will be, perhaps a food or clothing drive. There are so many needs out there, and we can use this as a starting off point. Again, thank you for using your status for something positive.
I am excited, this is a wonderful idea! I was wondering when you guys were going to start something like this. I am glad to see you using your status to help others in need.
I am your girl, if you need anything in Wisconsin.

Oh, and PLEASE come back to Salt Lake City!!!
May 21st, 2009 at 11:33 pm
Joe,
This is such a fantastic foundation for children to learn and grow through reading. As a Pre-school teacher and mom to 2 young kids, I encourage them to read everything…books, street signs, comics, grocery store ads etc. My daughter LOVES to read. She reads while eating breakfast, at night when she’s supposed to be sleeping, she rushes through her school work to get to ’silent reading’, in the car and whenever she can. With her love and passion for reading she has learned so much and is so smart. Her book collection grows every time we are in a store. She’s as excited as I am for your show…but for a different reason. She wants to pick out the books for me to bring! :o) She has a list of her favorties! My son struggled so much last year in Kindergarten as he couldn’t even read simple sight words and was very discouraged with his school work. With a lot of work, encouragement and lots of new Star Wars books, he’s one of the best readers in his class. He wants to read everything! I smile everytime I see him smile when he finishes reading a book. He is so proud of himself! Reading is one of the greatest joys and it’s a wonderful part of every child’s day to day life. With this book drive, more children will have smiles on their faces. Thanks to you and the rest of the guys for promoting such a wonderful gift!
May 21st, 2009 at 11:34 pm

This is cause is something close to my heart. I have three boys aged 8,6 & 2. I find it a constant struggle to find age appropriate books for my 8 year old who has a huge passion for reading, like myself. I hope that this will be something we outside of the US can help with, I am in the UK. You guys all have huge hearts for setting up the Let’s Get This Foundation and a huge Army to fight the cause with you. x
P.S We miss you in the UK
Pleas come back soon x
May 22nd, 2009 at 4:29 am
Hi Joe
this is a fantastic idea. You have the potential to touch millions of fans and therefore millions of children. Literacy is something I am passionate about.
Some statistics for you - 20% of children leave primary/elementary school [US & UK] without reaching the required standard in literacy. There are 3/4 billion adults in the world who cannot read. 50% of prison inmates have below standard literacy.
I run a children’s digital publishing company [http://www.wizz-e.com] and will happily enable you to download books for free. Our books read the story aloud to young children as the words highlight modelling fluency and helping children to associate sounds and letter groupings, or for emerging readers they can read the story to themselves and click on a word to hear it spoken without having to wait for adult intervention. So for busy parents/carers or for parents whose first language is not English or for parents who want to use screen time as educational time these books are perfect.
Let’s get kids reading and not allow our future generation to become part of the appalling statistics above.
May 22nd, 2009 at 4:57 am

Joe I love your idea! I have always been an avid reader and lover of books. I’m learning disabled but reading has always been my forte and strongest strength. In jr.high I was reading at a college level. My mom and dad always told me that a book can take you anywhere and they were right. I’ve been to so many places w/o even leaving my home. I am going to the blossom music center show in June on the 23rd. Will there be a drop off station where we can leave our books?
Sincerely

Hey there Joe.
What a fantistic idea. I was just at a Scolastic book sale with a friend and itw as amazing the amount of books there. If I was going to a summer concert I would be in for sure…alas there are no shows near me. So what happens to those of us who aren’t going to shows to get the download??? Just curious.
Thank you so much for everything u do and continue to do.

I think it is so amazing what you guys are doing. Life is about doing something bigger than ourselves, and the amazing thing is that those opportunities are around us every single day. I was on the cruise and got to witness firsthand how incredible you guys are, not only performing, but with your fans, and all the things you do to make a difference in the world. I blogged about our experience, and the amazing thing is that this cruise became something so much bigger than my friends and I could have imagined.

This is an excellent idea Joe, i’ll definitely be supporting this.
How about a book of all your stories to date and fans can also provide their stories of funny things they have done in getting to your concerts, following you around the county/ world, etc - i bet there are loads of funny stories from fans who joined you on the cruise, i am sure that all fans who couldn’t make it would love to read about other fans experiences and your experiences!! I would imagine that all fans have at least one if not more stories. Its always good to read other peoples experiences, at least you then know that you are not as mad as you may think (i had a sock pinned to my wall for years, a hotel concierge told me it was Jordan’s??!!) I am sure that this would have huge interest if it came from you guys and raise loads of funds for this charity as well for Cancer charities in memory of Betty Wood.
You really are a great bunch of guys, Love you all!!

Still need more proof why I want to help?
* More than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth grade level- far below the level needed to earn a living wage. The National Adult Literacy Survey found that over 40 million Americans age 16 and older have significant literacy needs.
*As the education level of adults improves, so does their children’s success in school. Helping low-literate adults improve their basic skills has a direct and measurable impact on both the education and quality of life of their children.
* 43% of people with the lowest literacy skills live in poverty.
* 17% of people with the lowest literacy skills receive food stamps
* 70% of people with the lowest literacy skills have no full or part time job.
* Workers who lack a high school diploma earn a mean monthly income of $452 compared to $1,829 for those with a college degree.
* The federal government provided $361 million dollars for adult education programs in 1996. This funding enables millions of families to participate in basic education programs that help people help themselves.
* Over one million children drop out of school each year, costing the nation over $240 billion in lost earnings, forgone tax revenues, and expenditures for social services.
* 44 million adults in the U.S. can’t read well enough to read a simple story to a child.
DO I NEED TO GO ON?

Oh thank you! I’m a Junior High School teacher in a city with a drop out rate that is 50%, and it’s so hard to get these kids to read. As soon as I find an author that the kids enjoy I buy those books. I spent $200 alone this year on Twilight books because they would read them. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot of money, but to a teacher, that’s mega-bucks. Keeping the kids interested in reading is hard work, especially when their parents don’t read, their older sisters are pregnant and their brothers are in a gang. These guys have no good role models. I know that reading campaigns are typically geared toward children, but lets not forget about the 11 to 15 year olds; they need good books too. Those are the ages when all the crucial decisions are made. Please help to give them the tools to reading too. Thanks a million!

What about parent training programs as one of the charities? I have seen parenting classes do wonders to help these kids because the parents don’t know that 5 hours of TV a day is not helping and that reading is important.
And as far as libraries go, often times they don’t have the current popular books, or their too far away, or the parents don’t want their kids walking to the library because it’s not safe and they don’t take them because it’s not convenient for them. As much as I love libraries, if you actually want to get the books in the kids hands, think about classroom libraries because kids are in the room five days a week anyway, so they’re around it and they see them. Just some thoughts. And again, please remember the Middle School kids as well.

Hi Joe ! I think it’s a great idea and would like to participate cause I love books and I think it’s important for children to read (and it’s seems that, in France - don’t know in others countries - many childrens and adults continued to read although there is Internet now, video games and stuff like that and that’s great ! So, would like to participate from France ! Tell me how (maybe we could, us, the “French Team”, reunite some books and give it to some french fans who will come to see you in concert in USA ?!). So, hope that many fans will hear your call ! Hugs from France (where we are waiting for you again !!!). Love to all.

Dear Joe,
Back in 1989, when the group released “This One’s for the Children”, I was 13 years old and that song inspired me and my best friend at the time to go out and help children that were in the “State system”. With permission from my school, every classroom raised money to buy Christmas presents for about 30 children. Each child was able to send a list to “Santa”, that was me and we were able to get one thing on that list for each child! I was never allowed to know the children’s names, but it was so special for me. I sent your fan club a letter to let you all know about the project and ironically, one of your sisters sent me a letter back!
I am so glad you are doing this. I am aware of the stats you briefly mentioned. Frightening!
God bless,
Francesca

This is an amazing idea!!! Unfortunately I can’t afford to attend the concert in Toronto right now. But I am sure I can afford to buy a book and donate it…please let me know how I can donate a book without going to a concert. Believe if I could go to a concert to do it I would, but life right now is tough me and my children, but I would love to help anyway I can. I just noticed the ad below for the donating to cancer…awesome! Cancer is terrible disease…I lost my husband 4 months ago to cancer…it’s so hard, I hope they find a cure for all types of cancer, so no one ever has to go through losing a loved one. It’s so awesome that you guys are helping out in anyway you can! You guys rock!
